What is tarot?

Updated: May 12, 2023

Tarot is a form of divination that has been used for centuries to gain insight into the past, present, and future. The practice involves using a deck of 78 cards, each with its own unique symbolism and meaning, to interpret the energies surrounding a particular situation or question.

The history of tarot is somewhat murky, with its origins shrouded in mystery and myth. Some believe that the cards were originally created in ancient Egypt or China, while others trace their lineage back to medieval Europe. What is clear, however, is that tarot has evolved over time to become one of the most popular forms of divination in the world.

One of the reasons that tarot has remained so popular over the centuries is its versatility. Unlike some other forms of divination, such as astrology, tarot can be used to gain insight into a wide range of issues and questions. Whether you're seeking guidance about a relationship, career, or personal growth, tarot can provide valuable insights and guidance.

The tarot deck is divided into two main sections: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards that represent archetypal energies and themes, such as The Fool, The Magician, and The World. These cards are often seen as representing major life events or milestones.

The Minor Arcana, on the other hand, consists of 56 cards that are divided into four suits: Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles. Each suit is associated with a particular element and represents a different aspect of life, such as creativity, emotions, intellect, and material possessions.

When using tarot, the reader shuffles the cards and then lays them out in a particular pattern, or spread, depending on the question or situation being explored. The cards are then interpreted based on their position within the spread and their individual symbolism and meaning.

It's important to note that while tarot can provide valuable insights and guidance, it's not a substitute for professional advice or therapy. It's also important to approach tarot with an open mind and a willingness to explore and reflect on the messages that the cards are conveying.

In recent years, there has been a growing interest in tarot and other forms of divination, with many people turning to these practices as a way to gain insight and guidance in an increasingly complex and uncertain world. Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or a curious beginner, tarot can be a powerful tool for self-discovery and personal growth.
